Colourful, evocative and nostalgic, the paintings of artist grAzie are witty and light-hearted deconstructions of images found in the universal library of popular culture. Her internationally renowned work draws together celebrity icons, magazines, Fashion, Pop and Music culture.
Working from photographic references, each image has been stripped back to a simpler and iconic portrayal of the subject
grAzie's art exists at the intersection of 'Pop Art' and 'Street Art'. Recognisable images of people in popular culture are recast in vibrant, bright colours and overlayed with the energy and wit of Street Art. The result is a series of iconic images of media figures that have moved beyond the impersonal graphic simplicity of Pop Art. It's Pop Art with feeling.
She loves to play with abstraction, layering and textures creating a medium that , merges elements of street art, Pop Art and Abstract-expressionism. Her distinct handmade style merges elements of abstraction, street, and fine art while her work embodies emotionalism normally absent in urban art she draws on both our love of the familiar and our nostalgic affection for the past.
grAzie represents all the iconic elements of her work within an exhilarating world of colour, and uses a series of playful and ironic techniques to surprise, amuse and dazzle her audience. Working with a variety of materials, she composes her distinctive paintings a unique blend of mixed media. Often working on metallic papers, canvas and spray and acrylic paint.
Born in New Zealand , grAzie studied Fine Art at Canterbury University. She now lives and works in London.
